Epoch Pilot while you’re correct that subverting a genre or work Can be lazy, I feel subversion can be done correctly. The exploration of race and xenophobia within Lovecraft’s work from the perspective of “the other” can be used to explore said existential dread. His motif is humans exist in an uncaring and naturally cruel universe. The monsters aren’t evil, per se. They just exist and are uncaring about the lives and fate of the small creatures known as humans (hence why many of his works involve an old-one merely existing and not fitting in within the human psyche). As far as his problematic works, I doubt they’d be focusing on “Cold Air” or other works that paint minorities and poor whites as “part of a cult.” However, Lovecraft is mostly known for his exploration of cosmic and Lovecraftian horror, which explores elements of what we’ve stated before. I personally feel that exploring that genre with a POC focus CAN be effective. The question is, would it be executed well?

@Viktor C The thing is, those elements of showing racism and xenophobia were small compared to the rest of his work. His works weren't focused on racism, xenophobia and classism, it was focused on the vast unknown and the vulnerability of mankind, how hopeless our entire existence can be and generally was its strongest when creating a sense of existential dread. It had those small elements because of his anxieties and paranoia, but they weren't the focus. Subversion of expectations is lazy way of saying you're radically changing parts of the work. I'm glad to hear you're at least aware of the history of the man and how his views changed.

The whole entire point of lovecraft's work, is the show that racism and skin color within the series does not matter because at the end of the day we are all screwed when Cthulhu wakes from his city lost in the sea. Yes the author turned the PC filter off, but if you look at almost all of his main characters suffer some form of a horrible fate. One example being Rats in the wall which has the main character commit cannibalism and end up in an insane assulyem.
