How rich countries are making the pandemic last longer

A program called Covax wants to distribute Covid-19 vaccines fairly. Is it working?
    Subscribe to our channel! goo.gl/0bsAjO
Early in the Covid-19 pandemic, many of the world’s richest countries poured money into the race for a vaccine. Billions of dollars, from programs like the US’s Operation Warp Speed, funded development that brought us multiple Covid-19 vaccines in record time. But it also determined where those vaccines would go. Before vaccine doses had even hit the market, places like the US and the UK had bought up nearly the entire supply.
This turns out to be an old story. In nearly every modern global health crisis, from smallpox to malaria to H1N1, rich countries have bought up vital medical supplies, making poor countries wait sometimes decades for life-saving support. It’s effectively a system in which where you live determines whether you live or die of a preventable disease. Leaving a disease like Covid-19 to spread unchecked in some places also gives it a chance to mutate -- and variants of the virus are already raising alarms. So: how do we get vaccines to countries that can’t afford them?
One solution underway is called Covax. It’s a program co-led by the World Health Organization; Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance; and the Coalition of Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI). Its goal is to get vaccines to lower- and middle-income countries at the same time as rich countries. So how is it supposed to do that? And will it be enough?

It's wrong that all countries cannot get the vaccine yet, but it's a harsh truth that if the rich countries hadn't put up huge sums of money, often gambling on results then vaccines may not exist at all. Covax sounds good but not sure it would have produced vaccines as quickly. If it becomes a reality it needs to be in place and organised before a pandemic. Another issue some countries do not have the infrastructure to perform a vaccination program, or some people don't take the vaccine on various grounds (this also applies to USA, UK etc.) We need to put things in place in preparation in advance of another potential pandemic.

Where politics and nepotism suppress talent , god suppress them. US should get vaccines first, because when they are working hard to pay for it,then they should get It. Though,I am from India , my brother was in India and is CS pro , no one cares but rather suppress talent in India, then, in end have to fly to US and is earning about 450k $ in first year salary and freelancing combined compared to less than 7K$ in india. Guy from Montenegro here, a small Balkan country next to Serbia, with a population just over 620,000. Mass vaccination has just recently started here, we had to buy a bunch of doses from China, and we got some of AstraZeneca. We gave up on Covax, since we're getting like 2,000 doses of Pfizer monthly till August, and those doses are going to go to high-risk groups. Serbia, also a developing country who has surprisingly done really well in terms of vaccination, has donated doses to us, and before that, Montenegrins were traveling to Serbia just to get a shot. So yeah, I gave up on getting a Pfizer or even a Sputnik V shot, so I went in and got the Chinese vaccine since Astra is not reccomended to people aged under 30

Covax would be great, but it just can't work. While COVID vaccines in all countries would be great, you're basically asking richer countries to spend money where 1% would be used for their vaccines and the rest would go to other countries. COVID is worst in poorer countries, but it's still bad in richer ones.

We realistically shouldn't be handing profits to these private companies when our government grants funded the research for these vaccines anyway. 85% of all medical product research costs were born directly by the tax-payer through government grants to the public universities where many of these breakthroughs begin. But then we allow a private entity to buy private ownership (paying the university, not the tax-payers) of 100% of the product. Now, don't get me wrong, there is investments into packaging the medicine, device, etc and ramping up manufacturing, but that doesn't warrant them keeping 100% of the profits off of intellectual property 85% funded by public dollars.

Obviously the countries with the most resources are going to get the vaccine first. And it makes sense that they would want to help their citizens as soon as possible. It’s not prolonging the pandemic. If it weren’t for the wealthy countries doing this there would be no vaccine at all. So it prolongs the pandemic assuming the vaccine is made as quickly as it has been. Which is not what happens in the circumstance where the wealthy countries don’t invest early on and get in line 1st.

To the people saying "Rich countries funded the vaccine so they should get it first", I can see why you'd think that, and it does make sense if you're looking at it in a very simplistic way, but if you look at it in a more empathetic way, it's not so simple. Rich countries are also better equipped to deal with the sickness and ensure higher rates of survival for patients. Rich countries don't have as many densely-populated slums causing high rates of infection. I think the right course of action here would have been to prioritize those most vulnerable across the whole world. So, the frontline healthcare workers, elderly people, and immunocompromised in rich countries AND poor countries get the vaccine first, because they are most at risk. And then we can move on to vaccinating young people who have lower risk of severe complications. A case could also be made for prioritizing based on population density, so if you live in a densely populated city like Hong Kong or New York, you get the vaccine first, and if you live in the suburbs where it's easier to socially distance, you get it later.

Dag geleden
